Chapter Ten

As Livy parked her car, she noticed Alex’s big black Suburban parked in one of the school’s visitor spots. She’d hoped he wouldn’t be there, but that was too much to ask for, considering he had a case to solve. She gathered her lunch bag and purse and headed for the school, far too aware of her clothes, her hair, even the way she walked. He could be at any window. And if he were, would he notice?

The yellow tape around the gym already looked tattered and stretched. They would have to find a more permanent solution soon. The principle and the superintendent had met with the board to consider options. Most people wanted to repair the damage, rather than try to get funding to rebuild. The school was small and a bond measure was unlikely to pass for such a large expense.

She tugged her security badge from her purse as Gage jogged toward her. She tried to hold in her anger about what he’d done. It didn’t matter that he’d opened his big mouth a year before, he’d still ruined the here and now. He’d had no right to tell Alex anything about her. He didn’t know her, only his fiancée did.

“Livy, hold up.” He stopped next to her, an unusually contrite look on his face. “Look, Alex was totally pissed with me yesterday and then so was Melody for talking about you. All I said was that the booze needs to stay home. I don’t know what I did that made everyone so mad, but I’m sorry. I didn’t even know Alex wanted to talk to you again and I’m sorry for making him think you were a lush.”

“And a whore,” she mumbled. “Don’t forget that part. I spent a year waiting for him, waiting for a call that wouldn’t come because he thought I was a whore. Because of what you said. I don’t have to like you, Gage. I did when I saw how good you were for Melody, but what you did sucked.”

“This is from a year ago? Shit, Livy. I didn’t even know you then. I thought this was about the alcohol. I wasn’t lying. I want to see you healthy, not relying on that stuff. You have to admit you drink, a lot.” His face shifted to the one he used when he worked on the ambulance. That insufferable know-it all look. The entire façade fell. He was there to make peace with his wife, not admit that he might be wrong.

“I don’t have to admit anything to you. You don’t know me. You see me for a few minutes a night as I’m leaving your house. If you don’t want me there, I guess I’ll just find somewhere else to go.” She strode past him toward the school doors.

“Livy, don’t be that way. Melody needs you. I told her when she moved in with me that you would always be welcome, and you still are. You’re her best friend. Don’t give up on her just because you don’t like what I have to say.
